There will come a time when, as a homeowner, you will need to look into window and door replacement. Whether this is after a new purchase or just to renovate, here are some of the signs to look out for when to replace windows and doors in your home.

When you feel a draft

One way that you will be able to tell if you need to replace your windows is by feeling a draft. This could be either from the frame or from the locks not closing fully.

If you can feel a draft in your house but are not sure where it is coming from, try checking all your windows and their frames.

Difficulty opening/locking

There are many reasons why a window or door might start being difficult to close or lock. One explanation is that the frame has expanded from the weather, or has simply dropped from usage over time. Leaving your doors and windows in such condition not only could be the cause of drafts in your home, but also a security risk as it makes it easier for unwanted intruders to enter your house.

Condensation between glass panes

There can also be visual clues for when to replace your windows and doors, such as having condensation between panes of glass. Condensation inside your double glazing tends to mean that there is a gap in the seal of the window itself. This gap allows moisture between the panes and traps it there in the form of condensation. It also means that the energy efficiency of your windows has also been reduced, as there is no longer a vacuum between the panes to stop heat from escaping your home.

Improving energy efficiency

As mentioned above, old windows and doors could reduce the energy efficiency of your home- whether it’s faulty double glazing or single glazing that is allowing heat to permeate out. If you want to make your home more energy efficient, then installing new windows and doors that are suited to that task is an excellent way to begin. We would recommend Smart’s Aluminium Windows and Doors ranges. They are designed to be not only stylish but also include a thermal barrier to ensure your house stays warmer for longer.

Update to meet your decor designs

Not every change needs to be made as a result of something breaking or being faulty. Sometimes it’s just nice to update the aesthetics of your doors and windows, and that could be changing the colour or even the style of the window to something more modern. Making these changes not only increases your curb appeal but also your own happiness with your home.
