Top 5 Things To Consider Before Buying New Windows
24th November 2020

As we can imagine, having to find your home’s windows broken is something that no one wants to come across. However, there are plenty of ways that you can fix or replace your window in no time. Let us quickly tell you how in some simple steps.

Assess the window damage

First, your window might be just slightly cracked or completely smashed, and deciding the extent of your window’s damage, you will be able to take the necessary actions to repair them. In case we’re talking about small cracks, you could quickly fix them, however, if your window is completely smashed, it will need urgent professional repairing.

Questions you might ask yourself when coming across your broken windows are:

  • Has someone intentionally smashed them?
  • Has lousy weather damaged them, causing small cracks that in time became more problematic?
  • Was there an uneven temperature that caused them thermal stress?

Decide on the necessary action

Multiple scenarios could happen after the evaluation of your window damage, and these are:

  1. Only your window’s glass has been affected

In this case, don’t worry too much as fixing glass is not as expensive, and it can be easily re-installed. The bonus that comes with this? You have the chance to decide on a new window design for a nice change.

  1. Your window frame has been damaged too

In this case, the whole structure of the window must be replaced with a new one, which might be slightly more costly.

What to do temporarily

If your window hasn’t been seriously damaged, it’s always a good idea to temporarily secure it for your safety. But don’t forget, that doesn’t mean that you won’t have to change the window at some point, as it will need replacement with a new glass for it to last longer.

First of all, safety! Before even starting to repair your window on your own, make sure to wear thick gloves (and goggles if needed). You can buy these items from any hardware stores or just order them online, as having the right equipment when repairing a window is very important.

Tip 1. Cover the window crack with a strong piece of taped plastic

By doing so, you will temporarily stop the wind from coming through the window, and you can easily confect it from the comfort of your own home. Just cut a generous piece of plastic from an item that you don’t use anymore and tape it over the cracks, but make sure you seal it well, especially around the edges.

Tip 2. Combine glue and a piece of material to cover the crack

Sounds like back to your confectionary classes in school, right? But it does work, we can tell you that! Do you have any stockings or unfitting pair of leggings that you could cut and cover the window with? Great! Take them, cut a large piece of material from it (preferably nylon) and glue it straight over the damage. Make sure that your material is resistant enough and that your glue is high quality for endurance.

Tip 3. Just tape the small cracks

If the cracks are tiny, you can make sure that the window won’t keep cracking further by only applying masking tape on the crack’s sides. Make sure that the tape pieces are large so they can nicely cover the window damage, and don’t use too much force, as the pressure could damage the window even more.

What to do if your window needs professional help

First of all, if getting your window replaced will take a while, make sure that you clean the window’s area, and even remove the damaged glass within the frame for everyone’s safety within the home and outside of it.

How to do it? Either by taking each piece of glass on its own whilst wearing protective gloves, or use a good tape to take away all the broken glass gently. If now your window has significant areas exposed, they will need to be covered as soon as possible with either plastic or even better, with plywood which you can buy from most DIY shops in the city.
