There are many things to consider when house owners start to think about various refurbishments and decor changes that they could apply to their homes. Usually, they start looking for windows and doors prices before moving to more complex changes. To get the best home window prices on the market, our honest recommendation would be to compare at least two quotes to make sure you’re getting a competitive price for your windows.

However, until then, we can offer you some guidance on how much you should expect to pay for windows in 2021 in this article.

How much does it cost to replace windows?

Finding reasonable window prices for a replacement can be quite a challenge, as many things can affect the cost of new windows, such as the material and the labour involved in installing them. Usually, it’s almost impossible to estimate in advance the time installers need to spend on replacing your windows without visiting your property. However, to help you make a start with your budgeting, we have a pretty good idea about the average price to replace windows in homes across the UK.

uPVC window frames are usually the most cost-effective option, whilst composite window frames are the most expensive type of frame to install. In case you want to add any extra security features, make sure to keep in mind that your costs will be slightly higher (plus the cost of installation, depending on your window fitters requirements).

We’ve gathered together a list with a different average cost of windows depending on the materials used in the window frames so that you can get a good indication of the differences between them.

uPVC window prices

uPVC windows are the lowest-cost option available on the market, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best option to suit your house. Low-quality uPVC can easily warp in time, however, high-quality frames are indeed easy to maintain, as they only need an occasional wipe down to keep them looking fresh.

The average cost of uPVC windows can vary, depending on their size, and the floor you intend to install them on. Generally, they range between £250 to £900, making them very economical.

Aluminium window prices

Aluminium window frames can be more expensive than uPVC, but they’ll give you long-lasting and durable windows. They are much more thermally effective, and their structures are very slim, which can significantly enhance your home’s aesthetics.

Once again, depending on their size and placement, they can range between £500 to £1000, and they come in with excellent strength and low-maintenance requirements. If you still doubt what to choose between aluminium or uPVC windows, make sure to read our blog.

Timber window prices

Timber window frames are the top choice for most homeowners as they can add a lot of value to your house. They are an elegant choice that can enhance the overall aesthetics (just like aluminium windows), and they are available in either hardwood or softwood.

On the negative side, when compared with uPVC and aluminium window frames, they require much more maintenance, which could add up even more costs in time. Based on their size and placements, timber windows can range between £800 to £1,500, where softwood is cheaper than hardwood.

Which are the cheapest window frames?

Based on the material you choose, you will see a noticeable difference in the available house window prices.

Casement windows are the most preferred choice for homeowners, and they are very versatile, being able to suit almost any purpose. Their price ranges between £150 and £600, depending on their size, style (fixed, one opener, or french), excluding the installation fees.

Sash windows are trendy in Georgian and Victorian homes, and they come with a very distinctive and traditional look. They can typically open either horizontally or vertically, being fitted with timber frames. Their price ranges between £500 and £900, depending on their size, excluding the installation fees.

Tilt & turn windows are a very stylish choice, and they can open inwards into the room, which means it’s much easier to maintain them. Also, by using this type of windows, you will significantly improve your home’s ventilation. They are an ideal choice for your children’s safety, as they offer a lot of flexibility thanks to their tilting feature. On average, their price ranges between £400 and £650, depending on their size, excluding the installation fees.

Bay windows can be found in all sorts of homes, including design options like box windows, circle bay, bow and oriel windows. Their price ranges between £1000 and £2,500, depending on their size and number of sections (3,4, or 5), excluding the installation fees.

Bow windows are essentially a type of bay windows which curve that add a rounded look to your home’s exterior. If you want to maximise the light in your home, they are a great choice. Their price ranges between £1000 and £2300, depending on their size and sections, excluding the installation fees.

What special features can I add?

You can choose from two features options to add to your windows: double glazing and secondary glazing.

Double glazing has prices between £300 and £600 per window, however, this dramatically varies on their installation fees, window size, frame material, style and type of glass.

Secondary glazing has prices between £100 and £300 per window, which once again will vary based on the number of windows that need to be upgraded, and their purpose (to reduce noise, draft or soundproofing, as these will cost slightly more).
